Salesforce for Higher Education: EDA, Education Cloud and the Student Journey

Universities have been running EDA for a decade. Education Cloud replaces it in 2026. Here is what changes for admissions, student success, and advancement, and what you should not migrate.

Universities have been running the Education Data Architecture (EDA) for a decade, and Salesforce is replacing it with Education Cloud in 2026. The migration is nontrivial. The upside is real. And half of what your current EDA implementation does should not be migrated at all. Here is the honest guide.

What Education Cloud Ships

  • Student model, modernized replacement for EDA's contact/account/affiliation model.
  • Program and course objects, natively modeled, not custom.
  • Admissions workflows, application intake, review, decisioning.
  • Student success, case management, early alert, referral tracking.
  • Advancement, donor and alumni engagement.

Migration Reality

EDA → Education Cloud is not a click. It is a data-model re-map, plus a decision on which custom EDA extensions to keep, retire or rebuild. Budget:

  • Small college: 6–9 months, $150k–$400k.
  • Mid-size university: 12–18 months, $400k–$1.2M.
  • Multi-campus state system: 18–36 months, $1.2M+.

What Not to Migrate

  • 10-year-old admissions custom fields nobody uses.
  • Duplicate contact records, clean before migration, not after.
  • Reports built for retired programs.
  • Automations tied to EDA-specific behavior, rewrite for Education Cloud primitives.

Adoption Reality

Higher-ed adoption is a political process. Faculty, advisors, admissions and advancement have different incentives. Successful rollouts sponsor named change champions per constituency and buy dedicated training time. See our adoption KPIs guide.

Regional Notes

  • France: Loi Informatique et Libertés and RNIPP interactions. See France.
  • Germany: Länder-specific higher-ed rules. See Germany.
  • US: FERPA compliance is non-negotiable. Salesforce is FERPA-ready, but configuration matters.
  • Canada: provincial rules + PIPEDA + Law 25 in Quebec. See Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is EDA being retired?

It receives no new investment. Migration to Education Cloud is the strategic path.

How long can we stay on EDA?

Realistically 2–3 more years. Plan the migration now.

Do we need Marketing Cloud?

Not required, but often paired for admissions nurture and alumni engagement.

Biggest mistake?

Migrating custom objects and reports without questioning whether they still matter. Half do not.
