The Executive Dashboard That Actually Gets Opened: 6 Metrics, No Fluff

Most executive Salesforce dashboards contain 30 charts and get opened once. Here are the six metrics executives actually check, and how to display them so leaders read on their phone before the board meeting.

Most executive Salesforce dashboards contain 30 charts and get opened once, the day they were built. Executives do not have time for 30 charts. They have time for 6, on their phone, before a board meeting. Here is the honest executive dashboard we build for every client, and why less is more.

The 6 Metrics That Actually Matter

  1. ARR (or bookings) run-rate vs plan, the number everyone asks about first.
  2. Pipeline coverage, pipeline / (target − closed) for the current quarter. Below 3x is the alarm.
  3. Forecast vs actual (last quarter closed), reputation of the forecast.
  4. Net revenue retention, the SaaS quality-of-revenue metric.
  5. Time-to-close on new business, the deal-velocity indicator.
  6. Top 5 deals at risk, the "who am I calling this week" list.

Everything else is drill-down.

Design Principles

  • One screen, no scrolling. Big numbers, small charts.
  • Comparisons, not just values. "$4.2M ARR" is meaningless; "$4.2M / target $5M / +12% YoY" is signal.
  • Traffic-light logic. Green / yellow / red thresholds encoded, not left to interpretation.
  • Mobile-first. Executives read on phones.
  • Trend arrows on every number. Direction over precision.

The Data Foundation

The dashboard is only as good as the underlying data. Before you ship, ensure:

  • Every open opportunity has a valid close date and realistic amount.
  • Forecast categories are enforced consistently. See our forecasting guide.
  • Revenue rollups reconcile with the billing system. If they do not, fix that before the dashboard.

What to Cut From the Current Dashboard

  • Any chart your CEO cannot explain in one sentence.
  • Any lookback longer than 4 quarters unless comparing YoY.
  • Rep-by-rep breakouts, those belong on sales-manager dashboards.
  • Multiple charts of the same data.

Beyond Salesforce Reports: Tableau, CRMA, Power BI

Salesforce native reports are enough for 80% of executive dashboards. CRM Analytics (formerly Tableau CRM) adds richer visuals and blended data. Tableau or Power BI are worth it when you cross-analyze CRM with product usage, financials, or external data. See our Data Cloud guide.

Regional Notes

  • EU: aggregate rep-level data at the team level for compliance with works-council rules. See our GDPR guide.
  • US & Canada: quota attainment is expected on the dashboard; add it as metric #7 if your culture demands it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should the dashboard refresh?

Daily is enough. Real-time creates anxiety and adds cost.

Should we include CS metrics on the sales dashboard?

Yes, one number: NRR. Post-sale health belongs in the executive view.

What about AI predictions?

Add an Einstein-predicted-close metric alongside the human forecast. Show both, let the exec compare.

Biggest mistake?

Building 30 charts because "the executive team asked for more visibility." Push back, 6 done well beats 30 ignored.
